Protocol detailed for ‘Silver Alert’ program

? Attorney General Steve Six’s office has announced guidelines for a new system designed to help find missing elderly people.

The Kansas Silver Alert program was approved during the last legislative session. On Thursday, Six announced standards that will be used to issue the alert for anyone 65 years or older who is suffering from dementia.

In general, law enforcement must have reason to believe the person might be at risk to harm himself or herself. And the person must be missing under circumstances that are not part of a normal routine.

In each case, law enforcement officers will determine whether it is appropriate to request public assistance in a search.
