District names 3 new administrators

One new face and two familiar ones will be taking administrative positions starting July 1 at Sunflower School, West Junior High and Lawrence High School.

Sue Hosey will be the new principal at Sunflower School. Hosey is currently in her 20th year as the principal of Washington Elementary in McPherson.

A search for a new principal began when the school’s current leader, Jason Jones, announced his resignation this year to join the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center.

“I found Sue to be a warm, friendly and outgoing person,” said Tammy Valencia, a second-grade teacher at Sunflower who served on the advisory committee during the search.

Sunflower parent Lisa Mason said she was impressed with Hosey’s modern approach to education. “Communication, which is important to parents, is high on her priority list,” Mason said.

At West Junior High, Jeff Harkin will take over as assistant principal for the new school year. Harkin, currently a social studies teacher at South Junior High, will replace the retiring Bill Montgomery, who spent 19 years in the position.

Harkin is no stranger to West. He taught there from 1993-2004 and spent the last six of those years also serving as athletic director.

Beryl New will take over as associate principal of LHS, succeeding Matt Brungardt, who will take over as principal for the 2009-2010 school year. New is currently in her fourth year as assistant principal at LHS. She also spent four years as assistant principal of Highland Park High School in Topeka and 13 years as a language arts teacher at Topeka High School.

All three potential administrators will take over pending approval from the Lawrence school board.
