Kansas History Day winners advance to national competition

advanced to the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest after their projects took either gold or silver medals at the Kansas History Day competition on Saturday.

The students based their work on the theme of “The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.”

Central Junior High School student Elsa Latare took the gold medal in the junior individual documentaries for her piece on photographer Lewis Hine.

Lawrence High School student Kristen Gish also brought home a gold medal, for her senior individual performance project on Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur War.

Liza Farr, a Free State High School student, won a gold medal for her senior individual documentary on Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement.

Central Junior High School students Ella Gore, Lidia Strecker and Gaia Morgan took the silver medal for their junior group documentary on Billie Jean King.

Brooke Fox, a West Junior High School student, also brought home a silver medal, for her senior individual performance piece on Ayn Rand.

All three gold medal winners will receive $100 travel stipends to head to nationals at the University of Maryland, College Park, near Washington, D.C. Stipends for Latare and Gish are sponsored by the Fort Larned Old Guard. Farr’s stipend is provided by the Lawrence-Kaw Valley Corral of Westerners.

The National History Day Contest is June 14-18. The students from Lawrence are seven of the 56 who qualified from Kansas.
