Man transported to LMH after stabbing; police investigating

Lawrence police are investigating a stabbing that occurred early Sunday morning.

A 19-year-old North Carolina man was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after suffering a single stab wound to his abdomen. His injuries are considered nonlife-threatening, Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said.

Police arrived at the Days Inn, 730 Iowa, at 1:07 a.m. in response to a medical call when they found the man.

He was the only known stabbing victim in a fight that took place on the east side of the hotel’s property, police said. Police were unsure of how many people were involved in the incident and what sort of weapon was used in the stabbing.

The investigation was slowed because of a language barrier. The victim and all witnesses at the scene spoke only Spanish. Police brought in a translator to assist with interviews.

“After a number of interviews, it is not clear what the fight might have been about or who punctured him with what,” Hadl said.

Police on Sunday evening did not return calls for additional information regarding the incident.
