Lawrence man in fair condition after car-bicycle accident

An 18-year-old Lawrence man was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital late Thursday night after an accident involving a car and a bicycle.

Hunter Higbie was headed south on Haskell Avenue when he crossed 23rd Street against a red light and was struck by a 2006 Lincoln driven by James Turner, 25, police said. The car, which had a green light, was driving east on 23rd Street when it collided with the bicycle in the west side of the intersection.

Police received the call about 11:35 p.m. and the cyclist was taken to the hospital about midnight. Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said the cyclist was being treated for a hip injury at LMH, where he was reported in good condition on Friday.

The intersection of 23rd and Haskell was closed temporarily but reopened once police finished their investigation, Hadl said.
