Madcap ‘Moonlight and Magnolias’ opening at Lawrence Community Theatre

A wacky, behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Gone with the Wind” — loosely based on historical events — is the premise of “Moonlight and Magnolias,” a play that opens this weekend at Lawrence Community Theatre.

The play, by Ron Hutchinson, opens with the movie’s director fired and the script deemed unworkable. Legendary producer David O. Selznick (played by Gary Foiles) meets with screenwriter Ben Hecht to do a rewrite of the screenplay. Selznick locks himself in his office with Hecht and director Victor Fleming, and with bananas and peanuts as their only sustenance, they finish the new screenplay.

In addition to Foiles, the cast includes Peter Hansen as Hecht, Aaron Champion as Fleming and Bonnie Cherry as Selnick’s secretary, Miss Poppenghul. The show is directed by Doug Weaver.

“Moonlight and Magnolias” opens at 8 p.m. Friday. Additional shows are at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 24, April 25, May 1 and May 2; 7:30 p.m. April 23 and April 30; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 26 and May 3. All performances are at the theater, 1501 N.H. Tickets range from $14 to $20.
