Lawrence High School to induct new members into Hall of Honor

Tradition-rich Lawrence High School will add a diverse 14th class to its Hall of Honor this weekend.

The 2008 inductees are Chesty Lions who have excelled in careers that range from law enforcement to real estate and from music to neurosurgery.

“What I’m thinking about is the generations of Lawrence High students who are going to walk by those pictures daily and what sort of role models they’ll be,” said Marsha Henry Goff, chairwoman of the selection committee.

The Lawrence Lions Alumni Association will play host to an induction ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at LHS, 1901 La.

The class members:

¢ Rex D. Johnson, a 1950 Liberty Memorial High School graduate, who served 24 years as Douglas County sheriff. Johnson also has received recognition for his work with youths. Local broadcaster and community volunteer Hank Booth, a 1999 hall inductee, will introduce Johnson.

¢ John McGrew, Class of 1956, a longtime Lawrence real estate agent and developer in Douglas County. He was a founding stockholder, with Bob Billings, of Alvamar in western Lawrence. McGrew also has contributed land for nature preserves. Former Journal-World senior editor Bill Snead, a 1995 inductee, will introduce McGrew.

¢ Chuck Mead, a 1979 graduate, is the founder and lead singer of Nashville-based BR549. Mead has been nominated three times for a Grammy and won a Nammy – a Native American Music Award – and an American Music Award. Mead, who makes frequent trips to Lawrence, will be unable to attend. His mother, Lois Mead, will accept the award, and former LHS Principal Brad Tate will give the introduction.

¢ Dr. Michael E. Miner, Class of 1961, who is a neurosurgery professor at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Miner has developed brain tumor treatment regimens and led surgical teams in South America to treat brain tumors and craniofacial deformities in children. Leonard Clark, an assistant Wichita State University athletic director and 2006 hall inductee, will give Miner’s introduction.

Principal Steve Nilhas will be master of ceremonies, and Patty Kuhn Kennedy, president of the alumni association, will give closing remarks. A reception will follow.
