Letter by letter, Stephen Johnson is teaching children about both art and the alphabet.
The Lawrence resident and successful children's author has released his latest book, "A is for Art: An Abstract Alphabet" (Simon & Schuster, $16.99). It depicts artworks that are literal depictions of each letter, accompanied by alliterative captions describing the works.
For instance, for the letter "I": "Indoors, in an industrial interior, is an installation of individually illuminated, isolated, immobilized immersed and inverted identical insoluble imitation ice cream cones."
The book is a result of an exhibition Johnson had at the Spencer Museum of Art at Kansas University in summer 2007, which featured some - but not all - of the works representing the 26 letters.
Johnson, who is known for interactive books such as "My Little Yellow Taxi" and "My Little Blue Robot," also is currently working on a new large-scale sculpture for the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum, located at Clinton Lake.
