A four-door Buick slammed into the passenger side of a Toyota 4Runner at 23rd and Iowa streets early Saturday morning. The SUV spun and tipped, sending a 21-year-old female passenger to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Susan Hadl of the Lawrence Police Department said that the Buick's driver was arrested on charges of running a red light, lacking proof of insurance and operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The SUV, traveling east on 23rd Street, turned north onto Iowa Street when the 1992 Buick sedan, heading north, ran the red light and rammed into the passenger door of the vehicle. The SUV spun and tipped, sending the drivers' side of the car to the pavement.

Police responded to the accident at 1:51 a.m., Hadl said. Northbound and westbound traffic at the intersection was diverted for about an hour and a half.

Roundabouts will save the planet and make baby foxes smile. On the other hand sobriety checkpoints are the fascist jack boot of the man keeping you down.

Okay there's something rotten in Denmark, no wait a minute that's Lawrence! In July (IIRC) a Semi-driver runs a red light, makes a left turn in front of a motorcyclist and kills him but there's no charges! Yet here we have a guy who runs a red light, hits an suv tipping it over, causing a 21 year old female passenger to taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the guy who runs the light is immediately arrested - yea, I saw the part about the dui. Big deal - the biker's DEAD!Guess we now know who rates in Lawrence (21 year old girls) and who doesn't any motorcycle rider.I don't know who I respect less now - the police or the DA!

How about we educate more about driving under the influence.

It says the sedan ran the red light and hit the suv knocking it over...so should we ban all sedans?

OnlyTheOne, calm down and actually learn the laws before you start blaming everyone. The reason why this driver was arrested was because of the DUI aspect. You can't be arrested for simply running a red light if there are no other aggravating circumstances (such as DUI) b/c it is only a traffic infraction, not even a misdemeanor. While the motorcyclist's death was tragic, it resulted simply from the truck driver running the light, he was not drunk or on drugs, etc, which is why there was no arrest. It's not the cops' or DA's faults, it's how the laws and court rulings work.

"How about we educate more about driving under the influence."I'd bet my entire pesonal wealth ($25.68) that if you asked the driver if he/she was aware that driving under the influence was illegal/stupid/etc., they'd say "yeah, I think I heard that somewhere".
