Driver arrested in rollover crash

A 1992 Buick ran a red light and struck this Toyota 4Runner early this morning at 23rd and Iowa streets, sending a 21-year-old passenger of the SUV to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Police arrested the Buick's driver at the scene.

A four-door Buick slammed into the passenger side of a Toyota 4Runner at 23rd and Iowa streets early Saturday morning.The SUV spun and tipped, sending a 21-year-old female passenger to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Susan Hadl of the Lawrence Police Department said that the Buick’s driver was arrested on charges of running a red light, lacking proof of insurance and operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The SUV, traveling east on 23rd Street, turned north onto Iowa Street when the 1992 Buick sedan, heading north, ran the red light and rammed into the passenger door of the vehicle. The SUV spun and tipped, sending the drivers’ side of the car to the pavement.

Police responded to the accident at 1:51 a.m., Hadl said. Northbound and westbound traffic at the intersection was diverted for about an hour and a half.
