Man arrested after breaking into Lawrence fire station, pulling fire alarm

A man broke into Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical’s Station 5 and pulled the fire alarm Thursday morning.
Officers arrived at LDCFM’s Station 5, 1911 Steward Ave., at 1:30 a.m., and firefighters led them to the suspect who was in a kitchen area with blood on his hands, according to a social media post from the Lawrence Police Department. The post said he admitted to breaking a window in the truck bay to get into the station. The post said he also told officers “he was seeing people while looking at a blank wall.”
According to Douglas County Jail booking records, John Kingangi Mwithiga, 31, of Lawrence, was arrested from LDCFM’s Station 5. He faces four misdemeanor charges, including criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, false fire alarm and possession of drug paraphernalia.
No firefighters were injured during the incident.
