A Lawrence man was arrested this week for reportedly threatening to harm a transient with a large chain at a local homeless shelter, police said.

Prosecutors charged Richard Snell, 44, with attempted aggravated battery on Thursday.

A city employee reported the crime against the 49-year-old victim, who is an acquaintance of the suspect, a police report said. The incident reportedly happened around noon Wednesday at the Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St.

Snell was taken into custody at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, in the 1100 block of New York Street, police said.

"A large chain was recovered," said police spokeswoman Kim Murphree.

Snell, 44, pleaded not guilty to the charge Thursday afternoon in Douglas County District Court, court records said. He's scheduled to return to court Wednesday for an appearance in front of Judge Michael Malone. The suspect is being held in Douglas County Jail.

Wow, offtotheright is so lacking in knowledge of transit systems that he/she doesn't even know that routes are circular? No wonder you are opposed to it, you must think we have to constantly buy new buses to replace the ones stuck at the edge of town. You should take a break from futilely attempting to insult Muslims and look into it --you will likely be amazed at the facts of just the reduced traffic and road repair.

LKPD needs to put a substation at the shelter. It would save the tax payers a lot of gas money in having to drive there several times a day to respond to the calls.

Lawyer question?Isn't "Attempted Aggravated Battery" actually "Aggravated Assault"?It seems that Assault has always been defined as including threats or attempts to commit a battery, resulting in an imminent fear of the same. I can't recall there being such a critter as an "Attempted Battery".Anyone?

critical information lacking in article:is Mr. Snell esq also a transient? also a guest at the open shelter? man, I'm glad they only play chess at that shelter. imagine if they played Risk! agree with redfred, just station one officer there all the time, a "resource officer, like at the high schools. save on gas/vehicle maintenance. if that were a home it would've been declared a nuisance party home and shut down years ago. where to move it to? build an island in the middle of clinton lake, make it like our local version of "devil's island!" or, how about putting it at eagle bend? that doesn't "break even." might as well provide another service.

Ralph, I think you're right that it's also an aggravated assault. I think the Attempted Aggravated Battery comes in play if the guy took a swing with the chain and missed. In that case he's has gone from the threat to commit a battery to actually trying to do it.
