Judge: Trial warranted in child rape case

A judge ordered a 41-year-old Lawrence man on Thursday to face a trial on three child rape charges and four other sex crime charges.

After hearing testimony from the victim and a police investigator during a preliminary hearing, District Judge Jack Murphy said prosecutors had presented enough evidence to warrant a trial on the seven charges.

Amy McGowan, a chief assistant Douglas County district attorney, accused the man of raping the girl several times between 2004 and 2007. The girl would have been 11 years old in 2004.

The man also faces two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy, one for criminal sodomy and one for aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The man pleaded not guilty to all seven charges.

The man’s defense attorney, Angela Keck, said she expected to file several motions in the case before the trial.

Murphy scheduled a hearing for Dec. 5, when he is also expected to set a trial date.

The Journal-World generally does not name those accused of sex crimes unless there is a conviction.
