Lawyer: Plea deal near in assault case

A defense attorney said in court Wednesday that a plea deal was likely close between prosecutors and his client, who is accused of pointing a shotgun at a 42-year-old woman earlier this month.

District Judge Michael Malone set a plea hearing for Stanley Schneck, 49, on Nov. 26 to give Schneck’s attorney, John Frydman, and prosecutors more time to continue negotiations.

“It looks like a plea is truly imminent,” Frydman told Malone in court.

Schneck, of Lawrence, faces an aggravated assault charge. Prosecutors allege he pointed a shotgun at the woman, who also lived at the home in the 1900 block of West 31st Street, during an Oct. 1 argument. No shots were fired.

Schneck is free on a $10,000 surety bond.
