A Rock the Vote/First Time Voter Rally will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.
The event, geared toward junior high and high school students, will feature local candidates and a high school battle of the bands.
Kim Patton, the library's young adult specialist, says the event is just about promoting voting.
"Even though we know a majority of them won't be of age to vote, we want to get them excited about the election and civic responsibility," she said. "We just want to build awareness on what your civic responsibility is, how easy it is to register to vote."
The event is co-sponsored by Douglas County Kids Voting and the Young Republicans and Young Democrats at both Lawrence High and Free State High.
Bands are still needed for 30-minute performances. Contact Kim Patton at the Lawrence Public Library, 843-3833, extension 121, or kpatton@lawrence.lib.ks.us.

Why is this geared to kids that can not vote yet? Maybe some highschool kids can but come on.

Good point. I'll take it one step further. I think we should *punish* children for paying attention to national politics and thinking about how they'll vote when they get older. Seriously, they should mind their own business.

Well mammaeffort x2 Like it says clearly in the article ….. “Even though we know a majority of them won't be of age to vote, we want to get them excited about the election and civic responsibility,” she said. “We just want to build awareness on what your civic responsibility is, how easy it is to register to vote.”To break it down even more… we also want kids to bring out their parents and older siblings so they can register to vote and learn about the issues. Kids live in this community too. It is good for them to learn early what it takes to be a good citizen and what issues are facing their community. They will be having a good time and learning about civic engagement, voting on the best pizza in town and voting for their favorite high school band. Its fun and educational and FREE! What more could you possibly want.
