Man sentenced to life in prison for former Lawrence resident’s death
A Kansas City, Mo., man has received a life sentence for the 2007 murder of a former Lawrence resident.
Missouri Judge Edith Messina handed down the sentence to Lamar D. Quarles, 19, on Monday after a jury in September convicted him of first-degree murder, robbery and two counts of armed criminal action for the shooting death of Derek A. Orchard, 37, of Overland Park.
Jurors had also recommended the life sentence without the possibility of parole after the verdict. Prosecutors presented evidence at two trials that Quarles and Antonio E. Smith took Orchard to a southern Kansas City park in May 2007 where they robbed him, shot him and stole Orchard’s car.
Orchard was a 1988 Lawrence High graduate who worked in marketing at the time it he Kansas City area.
Smith has been sentenced to concurrently serve four 25-year prison terms for his convictions of second-degree murder, robbery and armed criminal action.
