Jury finds Shanna Friday guilty in Deshazer murder trial

A Douglas County jury Friday found Shanna Friday guilty of second degree murder in the beating death of 62-year-old Jerry Deshazer.

Deshazer bled to death from a head wound he suffered late on Feb. 1 at his southeastern Lawrence mobile home. Deputy Coroner Donald Pojman said Deshazer died from a massive loss of blood from blunt-force trauma to his head that peeled back his scalp.

The jury deliberated for 4 1/2 hours before returning its verdict Friday afternoon. Friday, 37, of Lawrence, faces a sentence of between nine and 41 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 9, in front of District Judge Robert Fairchild.

During the weeklong trial, co-defendant Jerod Buffalohead, 36, testified that he saw Friday striking Deshazer with a glass bottle in the face and head during a drunken argument. Buffalohead, Friday’s longtime friend, pleaded guilty Sept. 4 to voluntary manslaughter and received a five-year prison sentence.

Friday’s defense attorney, Hatem Chahine, said prosecutors didn’t have DNA evidence to link her to the bottle believed to have caused Deshazer’s major injury.

“The jury really looked at the events leading up to and after the specific injury,” Chahine said in an interview after Friday’s verdict. “That’s what they were going off of.”

“She participated in the beating,” said Douglas County district attorney Charles Branson, who prosecuted the case. “Whether she dealt a lethal blow or not, the beating’s what resulted in his death.”
