Girl is 29th child left under safe-haven law

? Nebraska authorities say an 11-year-old girl has become the 29th child to be left at a hospital under the state’s much-criticized safe haven law.

State child and families division chief Todd Landry says the girl was left Friday morning at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha. She’s from Douglas County, which includes Omaha. Landry says the girl was dropped by her mother.

An 8-year-old Indiana boy was left at the same hospital Thursday morning.

Nebraska’s law says anyone can leave a child at a hospital without fear of prosecution for the abandonment. The law uses the word “child” and doesn’t include an age limit.

A special session of the Nebraska Legislature is scheduled for Nov. 14 to address the law.
