Lawrence police detective testifies in murder trial

Several more witnesses took the stand Tuesday in the reckless second-degree murder trial of 37-year-old Shanna Friday.

Lawrence police Det. David Axman testified about the crime scene where 62-year-old Jerry Lee Deshazer’s body was found at his southeastern Lawrence mobile home on Feb. 2. Friday is accused of participating in beating and killing Deshazer with Jerod Buffalohead, 36, after a night of drinking.

Also, Jarvis Jones, who has said he woke up from a drunken sleep to see Deshazer being beaten, testified on the second day of the trial.

Prosecutors will continue presenting their case Wednesday. Friday’s attorney, Hatem Chahine, has told jurors that the fatal blow can be linked to a broken glass bottle with Buffalohead’s DNA on it.

Buffalohead already has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received a five-year prison sentence.

Friday faces nine to 41 years in prison, depending on her criminal history.
