Defendant in Deshazer murder case accused of cruel attack, but she denies delivering fatal blow

The district attorney says a 37-year-old woman joined in a beating that caused a 62-year-old Lawrence man to bleed to death at his home in February.

But during opening statements Monday morning in the reckless second-degree murder trial of Shanna Friday, her defense attorney said the fatal blow in the death of Jerry Lee Deshazer can be linked to a co-defendant and not his client.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson told jurors that Deshazer, described as a generous man who often let people stay with him, was repaid in the cruelest manner possible.

“He was beaten to death by the very people he brought into his home,” Branson said.

Prosecutors accuse Friday and Jerod Buffalohead, 36, of striking Deshazer during a dispute after a night of drinking on Feb. 1 at Deshazer’s southeastern Lawrence home. He bled to death after receiving a major laceration on his head.

Branson said evidence will show that Friday participated in the beating that ultimately caused Deshazer’s death.

But Friday’s defense attorney, Hatem Chahine, said investigators have DNA evidence that links a broken glass bottle to Buffalohead and not to his client.

The broken bottle is believed to have delivered the fatal blow, Chahine said, and there will be evidence that Friday only threw a few punches.

“This was not caused by punches. This was caused by a glass that was shattered over a man’s head,” Chahine said.

The trial is expected to last five days.

The attorneys also said that the defense is expected to call to the witness stand Buffalohead, who has already pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the case and received a five-year prison sentence.
