Jury selection under way in murder trial for second suspect in Jerry Deshazer’s beating death

Attorneys began questioning a pool of jury candidates in a Douglas County second-degree murder trial Monday morning for 38-year-old Shanna Friday.

Amy McGowan, a chief assistant Douglas County district attorney, finished questioning a pool of jury candidates at 11:15 a.m. Defense attorney Hatem Chahine then began questioning them.

Once Chahine approves a panel, the two sides will work with District Judge Robert Fairchild to select 12 jurors and any alternates.

Friday faces a reckless second-degree murder charge as a suspect in the beating death of 62-year-old Jerry Lee Deshazer, the Lawrence man who bled to death at his southeastern Lawrence home. Police found his body on Feb. 2.

Prosecutors accuse Friday of striking and injuring Deshazer during a dispute after a night of drinking at Deshazer’s home. They also allege that she and co-defendant Jerod Buffalohead did not call for help, which caused Deshazer to die.

Buffalohead has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and has been sentenced to five years in prison.
