Police investigate incidents behind overnight injuries

Lawrence police are investigating two separate overnight incidents in which two men suffered injuries.

In the first, a 57-year-old Lawrence man suffered a head injury and was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital after a fight about 1:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the shopping center at 19th Street and Haskell Avenue.

Witnesses said the man got into an argument with one of two men with him, said Sgt. David Hubbel, a police spokesman. Hubbel said witnesses were being uncooperative about specifics of the incident, but at some point the man was punched, fell and hit his head.

The men had just pulled into the parking lot before the fight happened, Hubbel said. The victim suffered a head injury and was flown by helicopter ambulance to the hospital, but police said the man was in good condition.

Police arrested one man at the scene on an unrelated warrant, but they are still investigating the fight, Hubbel said.

After 4 a.m., police were called to Lawrence Memorial Hospital when a man arrived with a gunshot wound to his right foot. The 20-year-old Lawrence man said he had been carrying a 9 mm pistol in his pocket, and when he tried to pull it out he accidentally shot himself in the foot, Hubbel said.

The man said the incident happened in the 3800 block of West Sixth Street, but he was not specific about the location, Hubbel said, so officers would likely investigate it further.
