Iraq President Bush has apologized to Iraq’s prime minister for an American sniper’s shooting of a Quran, and the Iraqi government called on U.S. military commanders to educate their soldiers to respect local religious beliefs.
Bush’s spokeswoman said Tuesday that the president apologized during a videoconference Monday with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who told the president that the shooting of Islam’s holy book had disappointed and angered both the Iraqi people and their leaders.
It was the highest level in a string of statements by U.S. officials trying to soothe anger over the shooting incident, particularly among Sunni Arabs who have become key allies in the fight against insurgents.

As to the subject at hand… this was a stupid, stupid thing for one of our soldiers to do.
While it may *reflect* badly on our military, I certainly don't think this is *typical* or “exemplary* of our soldiers and military personnel. I think the overwhelming majority of our men and women in uniform are honorable, dedicated individuals of the highest quality. It's just too bad that a few crackpots like this one have to go out and spit on an otherwise sterling reputation.

Yes, that's right HarderFaster, the leftys can fling poo on likenesses of Christ and all kinds of stuff and just think it so cutting edge, but dare you not destroy the Kuran, a mystical and magical and wonderful document.

More thoughtful conservatives…
harderfaster, you're confusing what an artist does (and is able to do) with what a uniformed soldier of a sovereign nation does (and is allowed to do).
Nice strawman, though.
If a member of the Iraqi army shot a bible, would you be a little ticked off?

No, I would just guess him to be an artist and a liberal… and I would expect the rest of the liberal PC crowd to line up with him…

Classic…they cry about a US soldier shooting a freakin' book. How many of these “sacred books” are destroyed when they take turns blowing up each other's towns, markets, etc? These people need jobs.

So, I should be expecting an apology from them for every time they dance in the streets burning an American flag?
I'm not holding my breath.

A very interesting link, HF… especially the last paragraph…
“Many Muslims remain angry about the public humiliation suffered by their spiritual leader, the mufti Taj Din al-Hilali, after the Sheik likened female rape victims to pieces of meat who brought the attacks on themselves.”
but I guess we should try harder to understand them… right???
So now you know that the Muslim community there defends their leader who likened raped women to pieces of meat and says that they brought the rape upon themselves…

Copies of the pictures of the Quran obtained by CNN show multiple bullet holes and an expletive scrawled on one of its pages.
The soldier reportedly claimed he wasn't aware the book was the Quran, but U.S. officials rejected his assertion.

Apparently, people like harderfaster (flaccidslower?) don't know that it's possible to walk and chew gum at the same time—i.e., count me as a liberal who is disgusted by desecrations of the U.S. flag AND by descrations of the Koran.
But in HF's world, all of us left-wing automatons think alike and are out to make his virtuous life hell and bring down the glorious country that only he appreciates, with his own special brand of right wing political correctness.

No need to ban you, I_cant_take_it_anymore. A person only needs to read a couple of your posts to discover that there's no there there, and skip all the rest. You're pretty much self-banning.

Like it or not, this only damages our reputation, and also puts his fellow soldiers in more danger. What a damned stupid thing to do. If you're going to do something like this, do it at home where it won't do any harm. Then I'll support you 100 percent.
