Hearing date set for stabbing suspect

A preliminary hearing will be conducted June 5 for a Lawrence man accused of stabbing a man last week at a downtown homeless shelter.

During the hearing the Douglas County District Attorney’s office will present some of the evidence it has against Adam Mallamo, 19.

District Court Judge Robert Fairchild will decide if Mallamo should stand trial for attempted second-degree murder.

Mallamo remains in the Douglas County Jail on $850,000 bond.

Mallamo was arrested after the May 7 stabbing at Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St. The victim, also 19, was released on Monday from a Kansas City area hospital where he was treated for his wounds.

Mallamo was at the shelter playing chess when the stabbing occurred, according to LCS director Loring Henderson. But he said the stabbing was not a result of the chess game.
