Bush’s comments in Israel fuel anger in Mideast, US
May 16, 2008

Jerusalem On an emotional visit to mark Israel’s 60th anniversary, President Bush on Thursday compared people seeking talks with Iran and radical Islamic groups to the Nazis’ appeasers, provoking a political storm at home and accusations that he was politicizing the celebration.
Bush’s address to the Israeli parliament also stirred intense debate between Israelis and Palestinians. His strong words of empathy for Israel brought lawmakers in the tiny chamber to their feet.
Palestinians expressed disappointment afterward that Bush did not use the occasion to press the Israelis forcefully to make compromises toward the creation of a Palestinian state. While Bush has frequently promoted that goal, the only reference in the speech came when he looked forward to the 120th anniversary of Israel and the prospect of a changed Middle East.
“The Palestinian people will have the homeland they have long dreamed of and deserved — a democratic state that is governed by law, and respects human rights, and rejects terror,” Bush said.
Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian negotiator, called the speech a missed opportunity. Bush should have addressed the urgency of ending the conflict, he said: “We shouldn’t have to wait 60 more years for a Palestinian state.”
Bush’s comments about appeasement reverberated across the U.S. campaign trail, offering a new platform for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to sharpen their lines of attack.
In the speech, Bush warned that the United States must not negotiate with Iran or radical groups such as Hamas.
“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,” Bush told the Israeli lawmakers. “We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”
Democrats angrily called the comment a veiled shot at Obama, who has advocated dialogue with Iran and Syria, but not Hamas.
“We have a protocol ... around here that we don’t criticize the president when he is on foreign soil,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “One would think that that would apply to the president, that he would not criticize Americans when he is on foreign soil. I think what the president did in that regard is beneath the dignity of the office of president and unworthy of our representation at that observance in Israel.”
Democratic leaders demanded that McCain repudiate Bush’s comments, but he took Bush’s side. “Why does Senator Obama want to sit down with a state sponsor of terrorism? What does Senator Obama want to talk about with (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad?” McCain asked while campaigning in Ohio.
“Yes, there have been appeasers in the past,” he added. “The president is absolutely right.” Asked whether he thought Obama was one of them, he said he didn’t know.
In a statement, Obama responded to what he called “a false political attack,” saying, “George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the president’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.”
Obama is far from the only politician who has advocated a renewed dialogue with Iran to try to get it to give up its nuclear-enrichment programs.

Speaking of history, apparently our president slept through most of those classes. Or was home watching cartoons.

The conditions for the European theater of WWII were created at Versailles at the end of WWI. Perhaps Chamberlain's actions before the beginning of the war were bad, ill-advised, stupid, whatever adjective you want to apply, but they weren't the cause of WWII, and taking more belligerent action would have likely only precipitated an earlier outbreak of war.
While it's possible that the wars of the Middle East could spread to Iran and elsewhere, with devastating results, the best way to ensure that it happens is to attack Iran as BushCo are wanting to do.

Obamajad just wants to talk to another muslim. The problem that Obamajad doesn't grasp is that muslims will hate him and never trust him.
Barak is half African by birth and Americans can understandably identify with him. In Islam, however, there is no such thing as a half-Muslim. Like all monotheistic religions, Islam is exclusive.
As the son of the Muslim father, Barak was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Barak has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.
Of course, as most Americans understand it, Barak is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written ad nauseum to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him.
His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim’s family may choose to forgive).
With few exceptions, the jurists of all Sunni and Shiite schools prescribe execution for all adults who leave the faith not under duress; the recommended punishment is beheading at the hands of a cleric, although in recent years there have been both stonings and hangings.
In the eyes of Muslims, Barak is considered worse than a murderer. A man that arab leaders can lie to without violating the Koran or standards of conduct because he is a condemned man, a “ridda”.

But if there is any comparison here, it might be that Bush is a very agressive warmonger that beats the nationalistic drum to incite the people to hate a defined enemy..Hmm, does that sound familiar..kind of like middle Europe around 1933?? auti,
Not true. WWII saw the systematic demonization of “Japs” and “Krauts”. The government orchestrated the media to portray the enemy in a negative light. The war on terror has not seen the media broadcasting racial or ethnic labels, it has not demonized the arab world such as we have done in previous conflicts.
Also, check your history. Nazi (facism) was a socialist movement that replaced the communist left in Germany. Many German Communists merely changed from one form of leftist socialism to another form of leftist socialism.
The Nazi were the first eco friendly government, social welfare, social programs, eugenics, abortion, euthanasia, and so on. More in line with the left and mirrors the platform of the DNC today.

There was a strong communist presence, and many members of the parliment were commuist..but that isn't a communist regieme. When Obama sits down with the Iranian president, as promised, what is he going to say to stop Iran from sponsoring terrorism and creating nuclear arms?
He can't offer economic incentives or disinentives, because Iran is an oil rich country. Is he going to rattle his saber and threaten invasion? Doesn't sound like he will.
Is he going to offer up an unfettered sphere of influence in Syria, Iraq and/or Lebanon or promise that the US will no longer back Israel? If he does, that's called appeasement.
You can't continue the Bush is bad mantra and the “I offer unspecified Change” chant without sounding ridiculous.

McCain was in favor of talking to Hamas before he was against it:
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsm…
Was McCain For Negotiating With Hamas Before He Was Against It?
McCain said of Hamas: “They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another.”
That would seem to be at odds, at least in spirit, with McCain's pronouncement yesterday that Obama is unfit to defend America based on his willingness to negotiate with hostile foreign powers.
But the McCain camp claims that there's no contradiction here at all.
The statement continued: “Barack Obama has made his position equally clear, and has pledged to meet unconditionally with Iran's leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the leaders of other rogue regimes.”
Nonetheless, the McCain campaign is fudging the facts in this statement. Obama has never, ever said that the United States should “unconditionally meet with” leaders of Hamas or Hezbollah, as this statement clearly tries to imply (without quite saying).
In fact, Obama has explicitly said that we should only meet with Hamas “if they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist and abide by past agreements.”

Iraq's foreign minister urged Iran and the United States on Wednesday to stop trading accusations and sit down for a fourth round of talks to seek solutions to Iraq's security woes… “We believe it is very important to bring both parties to the negotiating table to discuss Iraqi security issues,” Zebari told a news conference.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/…
Zebari said Iraqi officials had proposed four possible dates for Iranian-U.S. talks on Iraq's security, the most recent being March 6.
The Iraqi foreign minister made it clear that his government found it maddening to be squeezed between two crucial allies who cannot get along.

I have some questions for the mouthbreathers who claim Iran is supporting the insurgents in Iraq:
Why do you suppose McCain has praise for Iraq's Prime Minister, al-Maliki, and Iraq's President, Talabani, even though they are both cozy with Iran?
Answer: Because McCain is senile, and doesn't have a clue as to what is going on in Iraq.
Why do you suppose McCain has declared Sadr an enemy, even though Sadr's spokesman has condemned Iran?
Answer: Because McCain is senile.
Which Islamic sect is responsible for the bulk of US troop deaths — the Sunnis or the Shias?
Answer: The Sunnis. The Sunnis allied themselves with al Qaeda. Bin Laden is a Sunni.
Which sect is the coziest with Iran?
Answer: The Shias
Which militia in Iraq is the largest, and why does that militia support al-Maliki's government and al-Maliki's coziness with Iran?
Answer: The Badr Corps. The Badr Corps was trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and it has always been cozy with Tehran.
Why did Iran support al-Maliki's crackdown on Sadr's militia?
Answer: Because Sadr has condemned Iran and the Iranians don't like him.
What was Bush's stumblebums expecting when they overthrew the Sunni government and replaced it with people who were living as exiles in Iran?
Answer: They didn't think that far ahead because they are all mouthbreathers.

gigolo, I did not mention black. Check definition
Racism, by its simplest definition, is prejudice and discrimination based on race. One with racist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their race (i.e., bigotry), or in the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits. Racism typically starts with, though is rarely confined to the assumption that there are taxonomic differences between different groups of people. Prejudices on other grounds would strictly categorize as discrimination to national or regional origin, religion, occupation, social status or some other distinction
You fit this definition.

Why is Obama referred to as “half-black” instead of “half-white”?
I mean, I dunno, so I'm just asking; not that is has anything to do with this thread, 'cause this thread is supposed to be about GWB's comments, re: Israel,

gigolo, the reason I call you and certain other mindless posters such as you racist is for single reason. Never once have you or those like you ever referred to other public figures by their full name as you do him, it's like you need to point out he has a middle eastern name, therefore he's not a true American. ”

William C “Billy” Ayres. Ayres, for some reason, the “C” in Ayres name is a mystery.
It is also difficult to determine the middle name of Antoin “Tony” Rezko.
Like their friend and compatriot, Barack Obama, for some reason they have chosen to bury their middle names.

Well, as far as Ayres and Rezko go, I can understand why criminals would avoid going by their full names.

And then Louis Eugene Walcott, another person close to Obama, found his middle and last names so distasteful that he changed them.

Huh?
Show the gentle readers a post in which I have indicated “racism” within the accepted meanings of he word.
By the way, Beobachter/Observer/ObservAr, just why is it that Barack Hussein Obama is referred to as “half-black” instead of “half-white”?
i mean, I dunno and you seem to have a lot of answers, so why don't you give it a shot?
