The grand champion of the 10th annual State Championship Sertoma Barbecue Cook-Off was Slaughter House 5 out of De Soto.
The competition was Saturday at Broken Arrow Park. Forty-eight teams competed in 48 categories.
Runner-up was MoKan Meatheads from Grain Valley, Mo.
The morning People’s Choice winner was Rub Me Tender, Rub Me Soft from Overland Park. The afternoon People’s Choice winner was Will Deal Barbecue Catering Company based in Topeka.
“Big” Will Wright, a chef at Brewster Place Retirement Community in Topeka, won the People’s Choice award last year as well.
Winners were also selected in each meat category. The prize money, $4,800, was shared among the winners.
Student volunteers from the Kansas University department of speech, language and hearing helped with the People’s Choice award event that drew about 1,000 people. Funds raised will help support the children’s Sertoma-Schiefelbusch Communication Camp in the summer.
