Chemical warehouse fire causes warnings

? A fire at a chemical warehouse in Mount Vernon released potentially hazardous chemicals into the air Friday, and residents were urged to shut their windows and stay indoors, fire officials said.

Firefighters were continuing late Friday to battle the four-alarm blaze, which had spread to two other buildings in the largely industrial neighborhood. Hazmat teams and the Westchester County Health Department were at the scene, and no one had been injured, the Mount Vernon Fire Department said.

Smoke from the fire had been blowing in the direction of neighboring Pelham, and the department was advising residents there to remain inside and shut their windows. Police Sgt. Glenn Scott told The Journal News that businesses downwind of the fire were told to evacuate.
