Youth Symphony, orchestra to perform

The Lawrence Youth Symphony and All-City Chamber Orchestra will give a free concert today at Central Junior High School.

The Youth Symphony has membership of orchestra and band students in grades seven through 10.

Program highlights include “Bratislava,” the first movement from Haydn’s “Symphony No. 7,” Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 6” and “Farandole” from Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne Suite.”

The newly formed All-City Chamber Orchestra will be performing “Larghetto” from the “Elgar Serenade” and Copland’s “Hoe Down from Rodeo.”

The symphony is conducted by Lynn Basow, orchestra director at Free State High School. She is assisted by Pat Transue.

The chamber orchestra will be conducted by Rachel Dirks, orchestra director at Lawrence High School.

The concert will take place at 2 p.m. at the school auditorium, 1400 Mass. A reception will follow.
