2008 Academic All-Star: Isaac Fisher

Isaac Fisher knows about accountability.

His parents and teachers have taught him that he would reap what he sows, and he learned in sixth grade that his grades can suffer if he doesn’t apply himself.

“They let me do things, and they let me learn from my consequences,” said Fisher, who is now tied at the top of his class at Perry-Lecompton High School.

Since then, he’s figured out that time management and hitting the books can do wonders in the classroom. He also manages to take on leadership roles in groups, including Youth Against Drugs and Alcohol in Jefferson County.

He also works 30 hours per week at On the Border restaurant in Lawrence.

Fisher will attend Washburn University in the fall to study pre-med and double major in biology and Spanish. He hopes to study later at Kansas University School of Medicine to become an anesthesiologist or a reconstructive surgeon.

“The teachers really give me individualized attention and really encourage you to go further,” Fisher said. He also credits his foreign language teacher, Maribel Johnson, and biology teacher, Kelly Haggard, for helping him transition from home-schooling to public high school since ninth grade.

Fisher also earned a Gold Medal of Achievement, equivalent to an Eagle Scout Award, through the Royal Rangers, a Christian-based scouting program. He said the support of Terry Newell, a Royal Rangers sponsor, and his parents also gives him confidence as he heads to college.

“That really makes it feel like you can do whatever you put your mind to,” he said.
