Border fence vital to security

June 27, 2008

On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to take up the appeal lodged by environmental groups that focused on a two-mile stretch of border fence in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area near Naco, Ariz. The fence, which has been built since the petition was filed, is a vital part of the Bush administration's drive to secure the border between the United States and Mexico. The Supreme Court's decision is a welcome and needed victory in the war against illegal immigration and efforts to preserve the unique character that is America.

The environmentalists based part of their challenge on claims the fence would harm the mating habits of two types of wildcats. To them, it is more important to allow wildcats to procreate than to control our borders and demand that everyone who comes here obey our laws. We must obey their laws. Google "Driving in Mexico" and see all of the paperwork that is required to enter that country. An illegal stopped in America often goes free because too many in law enforcement either can't or won't enforce federal law.

Time magazine's June 30 cover story is titled "The Great Wall of America: A billion-dollar barrier between the U.S. and Mexico. It's reducing illegal immigration - but does America really need to wall itself off?"

This isn't about walling ourselves off. This isn't a Berlin Wall erected to keep people in. It is a fence designed to keep illegals out. Anyone who doesn't understand the difference will not be persuaded by facts.

This fence and other inhibitors to illegal immigration should have been built long ago. But politicians - Republicans and Democrats - have been reluctant to offend Hispanic voters, so they have dragged their feet. Democrats, especially, wish to import votes and so they welcome illegals and seek to help them become citizens. Their message: Vote for Democrats, or your relatives won't be able to come and mean Republicans will try to throw you out. It's a twist on their demagoguery about Social Security, which has worked for them over many election cycles.

In a book to be published July 7 entitled "The New Case Against Immigration: Both Legal and Illegal," Mark Krikorian argues that the real problem with all immigrants is not them, but us. Unlike immigrants who have come before and were expected to assimilate, learn English and embrace American history and culture, today's immigrants come to an America characterized by identity politics, political correctness and Great Society programs. As a result, he writes, too many are encouraged - through the Internet and cheap international phone service - to lead "transnational lives," thus foiling the best efforts to make them part of us, rather than half and hyphenated Americans who remain strongly tied to their countries of origin.

Krikorian wants a lengthy pause in all immigration, legal and illegal, in order to focus on making Americans out of those already here. No nation can preserve itself, its identity and nature, if it refuses to control its borders. The recent Supreme Court decision is a good first step, but it should not be the last. Few politicians have the courage to say what needs to be said and do what needs to be done. President Bush waited until his last year in office to begin to get serious about stopping illegals, and Republicans generally seek to avoid controversy so it doesn't appear the GOP will be much help.

As for Democrats, why should they stop importing their best hope for future electoral victories? The public is going to have to rise up and demand that more be done.

supernik (Anonymous) says: its soo funny how a nation that was originally stolen by immigrants doesnt want any,*****You've hit the nail on the head. What happened to Native American culture, their way of life, and Native Americans themselves? Forever changed or destroyed. That wasn't the intent of the original European immigrants either now was it?

"barrypenders (Anonymous) says: I thought the more mexicans in this country the better? All we have to do is give them healthcare, shelter, a free education, and this country's standard of living will sky rocket."they pay for everything just like everyone else, they pay rent and utilities and buy groceries clothes and other goods, they pay taxes to tag their cars. there are tons of legal immigrants and natural born citizens that use the system, pop out baby after baby and live off of welfare, or social security, because one of their kids was born "special". healthcare? right, because we have a great healthcare system here in the US where tons of children and even more adults are without healthcare. they arent coming here for a free ride, they come to work, to make a living and give their families a brighter future, (i think our ancestors came for that too)

Correction: "this isn't the case with many illegals from Mexico"

supernik...They came for a brighter future, AND all the benefits this country provides. They use our roads, get free education, get fire and police protection, and national security. Also, most of their excess money is sent back to Mexico and is spent there. This is why Vicente Fox encourages his low skilled citizens to illegal work in the U.S, because billions of dollars are sent from the U.S. to Mexico. I am not stating there is no benefit to illegal immigration, but it is far less than the costs. Many fail to pay income taxes (since they get paid in cash to avoid the government finding out they are on the payroll), increase crime, and lower wages. There are benefits and duties of being a citizen of this country. Some of those duties include jury duty, and registering for the draft. If they agree to serve in the military for 5 years, I say let them be a citizen.

Build a 10 foot fence, and pretty soon 11 foot ladders become very popular.

An electric fence would make more sense.

I wonder why Agnostick's comments are always longer than the article he is ranting about.

1) Vicente Fox is not the presdent of Mexico. Felipe de Jesus Calderon Hinojosa is.2) Just what is the "unique character" of the U.S? And how is it in danger by immigration, illegal or otherwise.3) It is total nonsense that immigrants do not come here in assimilate. It is easier to assimilate today then in any other time in our history. In the past, immigrants were forced into certain areas of town through steering laws that are now illegal. If you don't think so, when you think of Boston, what do you think of? The Irish. When you think of Deerborne Michigan, what do you think of? Muslim/Middle East. When you think of Chinatown, what do you think of? Obviously, Asian. If you think of the Bronx, you think of Puerto Ricans. Los Angles--Mexicans.Why because that is where they were steered.USATODAY did an article on how more and more immigrants are moving to suburbs. Something that would not have been possible in the past.Immigrants are assimilating. They are learning English and they are proud to become American citizens. Just because they are also proud of their birth country does not mean that they are not proud of the U.S.My friend Guadelupe became an American citizen two years ago. This will be her first national election in November. She already knows who she is voting for and she is very much looking forward to it. And yes, she can speak and write English well.Dena

max1....Perhaps you are used to calling everyone that disagree's with you a bigot, but you are not using the term correctly. In fact if you use it against everyone you disagree with, you are in fact the bigot, plus a hypocrite.

"As for Democrats, why should they stop importing their best hope for future electoral victories?"This is obviously a typo, it should read "Republicans."

Denak, we are not talking about "legal immigrants" here, we are talking about opposing the POS illegal aliens "immigrant". The "legal entrants" that come do assimilate, the illegal alien pukes do not.I oppose all *illegal aliens getting assistance. I fully support leagal entrants, and legal immigrants. For Mexico, that country is no longer our friend, and the Majority of Americans now recognise it.Most all of the politicians who were big pro illegal alien rights, are loosing their seats, that was the uprising that put the dems in power, the rank and file GOP and the GOPers that vote are stongly supportive of legal immigration, but are opposed to the puke employers of illegal aliens, and the illegal aliens coming here.Heck we can land on the moon, but we cannot secure the border, and control H1-B visas? Look out you college liberals, the jobs you are giving to India and China and other countries throught liberal VISA aallotments could be your woun high tech jobs gong over sees, and them importing these pukes to take your jobs. You people are stupid and need to wakeup.Lood at Our country is in big do-do and it is not just from Bush and his stupid croonies, it is from neglect of 30 years of partisian politics dowing what is "right for the party" at the expense of what is "good for the country.GOpers that deseerted their putrid politicians know this, the dems have yet to realize it.

Let's not make a fence, let's build a wall. A great wall. The armies of invading Mexicans will crash upon it like the sea upon rocks, and we will be victorious.

compair how many u.s. citizens recieve "free money" as compared to illegal immigrants. i know tons of citizens and illegal immigrants, i can assure from the citizens i know and talk to from all over this country citizens are wayyyy lazier and more readily recieve "free money" they aren't hurting anyone, they do a lot of the work that others wont, without immigrants the country would stand still. thats just it.

How about we work out a trade - for every immigrant that crosses into the US, we send one redneck back the other way. Would be the best deal this country made since the Louisiana purchase.

Dandelion:I never stated illegal immigrants don't pay any taxes, if you read what I wrote again, I stated "Many fail to pay income taxes..." Of course they pay some taxes, but they also get a ton of benefits, and their net effect is a drain on the economy. I am in favor of high skilled workers from Mexico, or any other nation coming to this country. However, this isn't the case with man illegals from Mexico.

supernik 9 years, 8 months ago

its probably a chain link fence - cant afford much else these days

dandelion 9 years, 8 months ago

Satirical, I agree. Let's make them citizens, so they can be part of the system, at least the ones who have been working hard all along. Then weed out those who are here for criminal purposes. We end up lumping hard working illegals in with those who are here for drug trafficking. By the way, they do pay some taxes. When they rent, they indirectly pay property taxes, as the landlord will figure that expense into the amount they pay. They must eat and buy clothes, and if they do have a car and use the roads for "free", they have to buy gas that is taxed. The only tax they don't pay is income tax, but those who work with a fake SSN overpay taxes, because it is deducted, and it's too dangerous to file for a tax refund, which many would get, because they don't make a lot of money.

The immigration laws are a nightmare, but a border fence is a good start to solving this issue. We can decide what we do with the illegal aliens that are already in this country after (or while) securing the border; it shouldnt' be the other way around.

If illegals get free healthcare,,,then i should too,,,i was born here,,i didn't swim to get here

RedwoodCoast 9 years, 8 months ago

Yep, I think only laser-beam equipped sharks would do it. Seriously, a wall is a waste of money. People have built walls throughout history to either keep people in or out of somewhere. Ultimately, they have all failed."The Supreme Court's decision is a welcome and needed victory in the war against illegal immigration and efforts to preserve the unique character that is America."There you go, ol' Cal's secret motive... to keep America untainted by Mexican-speaking illegal aliens. Our sacred and unchanging population demographic must and shall endure.

supernik 9 years, 8 months ago

well, the military issue, As far as paying taxes, unfortunately there are many that do actually not work for cash, they use other information, i think there are many revisions to the immigration laws to be made, i dont think i would be as laxidasical (may or may not be spelled right) if all U.S. citizens were actually held accountable for themselves, rather than just being a drain.

Orwell 9 years, 8 months ago

When Cal Thomas says we need to "preserve the unique character that is America" I can't tell whether I'm reminded more of General Jack D. Ripper ("We must preserve the purity of our bodily fluids") or David Duke ("We must preserve our white Christian heritage.") Guess it doesn't really matter a nut's a nut's a nut.

Satirical 9 years, 8 months ago

Ok, here is the plan.We build a 2000 mile long electic fence, behind the fence is a moat that has shark with laser beams attached to their heads (every creature deserves a warm meal), then past the sharks we will have giant mouse traps.Does anyone want to make any amendments to this law before we take a vote?

dandelion 9 years, 8 months ago

it would be great if they would make it easier for Mexicans to immigrate here. Then the employers would be more willing to cooperate with la migra, because they could have their good workers, and the only illegals would be those who had some sort of criminal records and are here for drug dealing or other crimes. What is wrong with letting some of the poor Mexican families in to either become citizens or to give them a temporary work visa? There are a lot of hard-working families who come here to get ahead. They can't get into the country illegally, because it costs too much, plus people with college degrees are given preference. It's funny. The people who tout working hard and finding opportunities get ahead are the most vocal about not letting poor Mexicans into our country, who are trying to get a leg up and do better for their families. Ironic, huh?
