Charges filed in high-speed chase

Wyandotte County prosecutors filed charges Monday against a 23-year-old Lawrence man accused of taking authorities on a high-speed chase Sunday that ended in western Kansas City, Kan.

Roderick D. Lawton faces charges of felony eluding law enforcement, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving in Wyandotte County, said Chris Schneider, an assistant district attorney.

Lawrence police say that late Sunday morning, Lawton failed to stop his vehicle for officers in Douglas County. A chase continued east into the Kansas City area on Kansas Highway 32. Lawton was alleged to be driving faster than 100 mph.

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers took over the chase in Wyandotte County, and it ended in a western Kansas City, Kan., residential area when officers set up spikes in the road. Troopers also said they recovered a weapon from the vehicle.

Lawton on Monday remained in the Wyandotte County Jail on $25,000 bond. He was expected to make a first appearance in court today, Schneider said.

A Douglas County district attorney’s office spokeswoman said Monday that prosecutors here had not yet received information about filing local charges.
