All-Area Girls Soccer First Team

Alexa Moreno
Tonganoxie High, Sr.

Moreno was the leading scorer for the Chieftains, racking up 18 goals and 17 assists during her three years with the program. Three goals and three assists came in regional play as Moreno helped THS claim its first regional victories in ’07 and ’08.

Madison Bertrand
Lawrence High, Sr.

Bertrand filled a number of roles during the 2008 season and excelled at each of them. She started the season as a defender then moved into a more offensive role as a striker. Bertrand closed the season as a center midfielder, where she was vital in limiting attacks and creating transition. Such skill and versatility earned her a soccer scholarship at Johnson County Community College.

Emma Lumpe
Lawrence High, Jr.

She may have missed several games in the beginning of the season because of injury but junior goalie Emma Lumpe still turned in a stellar season for the Lions. Lumpe led LHS to the most wins in the last eight years and played brilliantly in a shootout loss to Washburn Rural in the regional final.

Stef Stuever
Lawrence High, Jr.

Stuever spent most of the season as a center midfielder, but also helped her team offensively as a striker. A tenacious competitor, Stuever contributed big-time goals for her team including a ringer against Olathe North in her first start as striker. Stuever earned first-team all-state honors.

Grace Lang,
Free State High, Soph.

Lang was a major defensive asset for the Firebirds. As the starting central defender, she helped her team shut down its opponents’ offense. Her many tackles and strong physical presence on the field earned her first-team all-Central Region and first-team all-state honors for the season.

Hannah Carlson
Free State High, Soph.

Carlson had a terrific season for the Firebirds in 2008. She was key in creating scoring opportunities, racking up five goals and six assists as Free State’s second leading scorer. A powerful force on the field, Carlson was named to the second-team all-Sunflower League in addition to first-team all-Central Region and second-team all-state honors.

Leah Williams,
Free State High, Sr.

Williams has been a strong force for Free State throughout her high school career, earning all-state honors for the past three seasons. Despite being sidelined by a wrist injury halfway through the season, Williams led the Firebirds in scoring with six goals and four assists.

BreAnne Hendricks,
Ottawa, Senior

As team captain, Hendricks was both a powerful offensive strength and a fierce defender for Ottawa this season. With eight goals and four assists, Hendricks was a major contributor to her team’s 7 wins. She plans to continue her career at Baker University.

Becky Newhouse
Mill Valley High, Jr.

Newhouse led the Kaw Valley league in saves and shutouts, leading the Jags to a KVL title. The goalie also played the field more this season and became a significant offensive asset for the Jaguars. Newhouse earned first-team all-league and second-team all-state honors.

Kelly Donaghy
Mill Valley High, Jr.

As a second-team all-KVL and second-team all-state pick, Donaghy was the primary scorer for the Jaguars. Her impressive totals included three goals in three minutes in the Jags’ 10-0 win over Bonner Springs.
