Amtrak announced today that it will resume service of the Southwest Chief rail line tomorrow, as flooding along the BNSF Railway route in Iowa subsides.

The rail carrier had suspended the route Tuesday as cresting waters made train tracks impassable, providing buses for travelers going between Kansas City and Galesburg, Ill.

The alternate transportation continues through today, with the exceptions of La Plata, Mo., and Fort Madison, Iowa. Passengers with tickets to those destinations are being offered other transportation options at Amtrak stations in Illinois.

Amtrack is also pleased to announce their new "Wading Pool Cars", which will allow it's passengers to frolick in the water after the train derails... I mean, on their uneventful trip through the flood ravaged countryside.

I took Amtrak to Wisconsin about 4 years ago just to try something different, and the trains (Lawrence-to-Chicago and Chicago-to-Milwaukee) were full to capacity! It was a great trip, too - beautiful countryside, of course, and good food, and really easy to meet and visit with a lot of people in the dining and observation cars. I highly recommend train travel, even as it exists in the good ol' US of A.

Just went to Santa Fe, NM a few weeks ago by train with my husband. It was fantastic. Beautiful scenery and comfortable. You should try it.
