N.Y. Street fire not caused by lightning

Blaze started in midst of Thursday night's storm

Firefighters respond to a call of a house fire Thursday, June 12, 2008 in the 1100 block of New York Street.

Lawrence fire officials declared the cause of a residential structure fire Thursday night as an accidental electrical fire.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said an electrical source inside the home, at 1141 N.Y., sparked the blaze.

Firefighters were dispatched to the home at 7:40 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 8:14 p.m. They were battling the blaze while a severe storm raged around them.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials estimate the damage to be about $106,000.

One person was in the house at the time the fire was discovered, but the occupant left safely. The American Red Cross assisted 10 people who were displaced because of the fire.
