KU football aides 7th on Big 12 salary scale

Thanks to Tuesday’s announcement that Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino had inked a contract extension making him the 13th-highest-paid football coach in the country, it became apparent that the university is willing to pay its head coaches among the best in the land.

The contract, which will pay the seventh-year coach $2.3 million annually, also makes him the third-best-compensated coach in the Big 12, behind Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Texas’ Mack Brown.

But how does the university stack up when it comes to opening its wallet for assistants?

According to a recent study in The Oklahoman, not great.

But not bad, either.

The study, which analyzed contracts from 11 of the Big 12’s universities (Baylor, a private institution not required to make salaries public, was not included), showed that Kansas assistant football coaching salaries ranked seventh out of the 11 conference schools, with coaches making a collective $1,636,500 per year.

The most well-paid assistants in the conference reside in Austin, Texas, where Longhorns coaches earn a total of $2,383,134, followed by Oklahoma State ($2,128,000), Texas A&M ($2,020,000) and Oklahoma ($1,916,000).

The Jayhawks’ most well-compensated assistant is second-year offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, who ranks fourth among league offensive coordinators with a salary of $275,000.

Kansas didn’t have anyone ranked among the top-10 highest-paid assistants in the conference (Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis tops the list at $425,000 a year), but it didn’t have any in the bottom 10, either (Iowa State defensive backs coach Jeff Koonz brings up the caboose at $80,000).

Here’s a look at salaries from some of the Jayhawks’ assistants, along with how they rank among opposing league coaches at the same position:
