An armed Kansas City, Kan., man who left a trail of wreckage in Lawrence Thursday following an hourlong police chase, was tased and taken into custody.

The man had a semi-automatic pistol, Lawrence Police Sgt. Damon Thomas said.

Police revealed few other details about the suspect, except that he was born in 1984.

Thomas said a van had been reported stolen in Lawrence earlier in the evening and wound up in Leavenworth County soon after. Leavenworth County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the stolen van about 9 p.m., when the chase began.

The van was reportedly driving at speeds up to 90 mph.

Leavenworth County deputies chased the suspect back into North Lawrence.

Thomas said the suspect hit the first vehicle in Lawrence at the intersection of 19th and Massachusetts streets. He then carjacked a person’s Toyota Highlander in the Dairy Queen parking lot at 1835 Mass.

The suspect continued driving toward downtown and hit a car at 11th and Vermont and another one at 11th and Massachusetts streets.

Gene Nutt, 36-year-old owner of Game Nut Entertainment, witnessed the man speeding down Massachusetts Street swerving right to left, hitting cars like “ping-pong,” he said. Nutt had parked his car in front of Rudy’s Pizzeria, 704 Mass., to go to the Granada. He was crossing Massachusetts Street when the suspect began “flying through” downtown, Nutt said. He was nearly hit, but because he heard the suspect crash into another vehicle he ran out of the way.

“We didn’t get hit, fortunately,” Nutt said.

The Kansas City man crashed the Highlander into a white Mazda in front of the Granada, which disabled the Highlander.

Cordell Mumford and Alicia Lopez were in the Mazda when it was hit. Mumford, 22, said he was driving southbound on Massachusetts Street when the Toyota careened into the southbound lane, driving the wrong way, from 11th Street. Mumford swerved into the northbound lane to avoid the vehicle, which slammed into the front passenger side of the Mazda.

“Basically, we were driving and saw the vehicle swerve,” Mumford said. “We didn’t know what was going on. We were just out.”

After hitting the Mazda, the suspect ran out of the Toyota toward 10th Street.

“I went chasing him, but he turned around with a gun,” Nutt said.

Immediately following, Nutt said he heard gunshots.

“I heard pop, pop, pop,” he said.

Another witness said the suspect was pacing down 10th Street, with a pistol to his own head.

“He was pacing, thinking about doing it,” said Mike Chanthavongsa, who watched the scene unfold outside his restaurant, Indo.

Police quickly surrounded the suspect. A Kansas Highway Patrol officer tased the suspect in the back.

The suspect was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for evaluation, Thomas said.

There were no injuries during the incident.
