Author to speak at teen conference
A former Miss Black California and commentator will be the featured speaker at this year’s Straight Up Beautiful conference.
Lakita Garth, who authored the book “The Naked Truth” and is a frequent guest on TV’s “Politically Incorrect” and “The View,” will speak at the conference, which will be Feb. 8-9 at Morning Star Church, 998 N. 1771 Road.
The conference, in its fifth year, is designed to help teenage girls develop a positive self-image.
Garth has ties to the civil rights movement. Her grandfather was pastor at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., which was the site of a bombing that killed four girls. Her family also played host to Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1960s.
Garth’s presentations deal with responsibility, with her often saying that “no one has the right to squander the rights that others have paid for with their lives.”
