KU professor brings bamboo into classroom
Tom Huang, Kansas University assistant professor of industrial design, is showing his latest works through Feb. 1 at the Lawrence Arts Center. This exhibition is an installation involving laser cut parts and hand-split bamboo.
The installation expands on themes in Huang’s works that explore reconciling cultural dichotomies. Running concurrently with the exhibition, Huang’s 2008 spring semester design course titled “Beyond Tiki Torches: Bamboo A Material Exploration” will encourage students to explore and utilize this highly renewable material in nontraditional ways. The development of the course was supported by the KU Center for East Asian Studies.
Huang also will present a brief demonstration on traditional Japanese bamboo splitting techniques used in traditional basketry during his artist talk at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at the center, 940 N.H. For more information, call 864-4401 or the arts center at 843-2787.
