Lawmakers to publicly discuss big issues

State legislators from Douglas County will answer questions about issues surrounding this year’s session Thursday at the Dole Institute of Politics, 2350 Petefish Drive.

The Lawrence branch of the American Association of University Women is sponsoring the public forum at 7:30 p.m. in the institute’s Simons Media Room.

Marilyn Greathouse, an organizer for the forum, said topics of discussion will include education and wind energy.

All Douglas County legislators have been invited, including Reps. Barbara Ballard, Paul Davis, Tom Holland and Sen. Marci Francisco, all Democrats; and Sen. Roger Pine and Rep. Tom Sloan, both Republicans.

The county’s legislative delegation has scheduled pre-session hearings during which organizations and citizens can present their agendas and issues for the upcoming session, which begins Jan. 14. The hearings will be 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the curriculum conference room of Lawrence school district headquarters, 110 McDonald Drive.
