Kidnapping suspect may face Mo. charges

A man suspected of kidnapping a Lawrence woman last week from a shopping center parking lot likely will face charges in Missouri before he returns to Kansas.

Donald Bartsma, 40, Wichita, is being held on a $1 million bond in the Clay County, Mo., jail. He has several charges in that county after allegedly trying to rob a woman in a Kansas City, Mo., shopping center parking lot and then leading police on a high-speed chase.

A Clay County prosecutor said he thought their case would be handled first.

The incident in Kansas City occurred on Feb. 13, hours after a woman called Lawrence police to tell them she had been kidnapped by a man armed with a knife. The man approached her and forced her into her car in the 3400 block of Iowa Street. The man drove her to a bank where he made her withdraw money. After driving south of Lawrence to a site near Wells Overlook Park, the suspect got out of the car and fled.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said his office is still gathering information about that incident.
