Survival of hate radio in doubt

February 16, 2008

I'm worried about hate radio.

It could be losing its influence.

If hate radio loses its influence, it will lose its audience.

If it loses its audience, it will lose its sponsors.

If it loses its sponsors, well, I'm not sure I want to live in a country where people can disagree without hating. I mean, debate without hate is so, I don't know, so lily-livered, so PBS.

Of course, the maestros of hate radio - the Michael Savages, the Glenn Becks, the Big Kahuna of Hate his own self, Rush Limbaugh - have only themselves to blame for their predicament.

In the race for the Republican presidential nomination, they put all their hate in one basket and lost big time. You would think they would have been savvy enough to hedge their hate, just in case it became necessary to switch hatreds in midstream. But they weren't.

No, the boys gave all their man love to Mitt Romney, and when he dropped out of the race - after concluding that discretion was the better part of remaining wealthy - they were left at the altar.

The obvious thing for Rush and his supporting cast to do would be to back the presumptive GOP nominee, John McCain. That, however, is not as easy as it sounds.

What got McCain condemned to hate radio hell is his position on illegal immigration. In hate radio's view, McCain doesn't hate the 12 million or so illegals in this country enough to be a real conservative, not to mention American.

So, for the mullahs of the microphones to start supporting McCain, they would have to ease up on their hatred of illegal immigrants, and that's just not going to happen. Life's too short.

Hate radio must not be allowed to fall silent.

If hate radio loses its voice, where will listeners go for their daily infusion of vitriol, "Prairie Home Companion?"

If hate radio fades to static, where will we turn for the half truth? Distortion? Mean-spirited humor?

And what would become of fear-mongering? Tell me life without fear-mongering isn't a frightening thought.

What to do?

Here is my suggestion:

I think all the hate-radio jocks, along with all the TV talking-head haters, should turn on each other.

Seriously, these people are not only accomplished haters but are themselves easy to hate.

We're not just talking Limbaugh and Savage here, we're also looking at the likes of Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and the undisputed Queen of All Hate, Ann Coulter.

This group would push each other to new levels of viciousness, which would be very entertaining, which is the point of hate media, right?

The hatefest would attract not only the regular hate-radio audience but people from the other end of the political spectrum, who would tune in to see people they hate hate each other.

Like I said, I'm concerned about hate radio. I hope this helps.

I guess its called hate when you disagree with someone's policies and you call them on it. Just like questioning anything they have done during their time in the senate is called "attacking" the person. Seriously, El Rushbo has better ratings than ever before and last time I checked he wasn't in the race for President. If he is losing his influence then why has everyone in the race, especially McCain, tried to claim themselves as the "most conservative" and most like Regan. I think those claims say it all.

Those hate radio people are neo-cons and definitely not traditional Republicans. Fabulous and humorous article.

If this isn't an a classic example of jealousy, I don't know what is. This guy is in love with the word "hate".

jumpin_catfish 6 years, 10 months ago

The H-word oh heavens save us! This article is a less than transparent attempt to demonize one's political opponent(s) and yes if you want to hear hate radio listen to Air America. I don't listen to any of it, I get all the hate speak I need to hear from this blog.

bondmen 6 years, 10 months ago

The old media format which is a proven money loser is politically unbalanced newspapers Jim Shea, big businesses just like the one for which you write. They continue to change publishers, lose circulation and lay off writers, the vast majority of which think (uuhhh, don't think) just like you!

What is at risk is free speech via the radio airwaves, a venue thinking people have turned to to get the other side of the story with all the facts surrounding important issues. Millions of Americans listen to talk radio for the balance that is missing on TV and in the newspapers. The fairness doctrine is a real and present danger to our First Amendment rights to free speech and this anti-free speech push will prosper under Democrat political control.

Jim, if you don't like to listen to Michael Savage and Ann Coulter then do what intelligent Americans do that don't like the liberal bias in the media, don't buy it and don't turn it on! What motivates you to want to put your grubby little mits on the throat of free speech in America anyway?

Sigmund 6 years, 10 months ago

You haven't heard Hate Radio till you have listened to Air America, not that you can actually listen to it over the air anymore, If Rush Limbaugh et. al. need some advice these would be the folks to listen to, they've actually have gone bankrupt more times than Alec Baldwin has been in re-hab. http://www.airamerica.com/

Hate radio? These guys don't express hatred, they express opinions and if that is hate, then God help us should the writer ever come in contact with regular mainstream radio and television where hatred of anything that is not liberal or politically correct has become a disease.

If you don't like gays, liberal media will cut your cajones off. If you object to preferential treatment based on race, liberal media will call you a bigot. If you are a Christian, liberal media will remind you that you were part of the Crusades. If you are White and not apologetic for it, liberal media will deem you a "White supremacist", an evil "racist", a "Nazi" or some other catchy adjective/noun/pronoun. And it goes on.

Nobody's advocating putting any "grubby mitts on the throat of free speech in America". Jeez.

I tell you what, though, you've got the style of the shouters down pat! Overreaction is KEY! Get yourself a radio show, dude!~)

I was all prepared not to like this editorial...but it's just so funny!~)

What a hilarious article, so full of hate and arrogance.

Robert bickers 6 years, 10 months ago

Sigmund's right, check out (what's left of) Air America if you want hate. I don't hear Rush & Co. calling for the death of an elected leader . . . more hot air than hate.

Frederic Gutknecht IV 6 years, 10 months ago

Soooo... some of y'all don't think this is funny? ...at all? Just because a few of your sacred cows are being cleverly harpooned or lampooned or poon choied in some way? That's fine. You bunch of babies! I hate you! Just kidding. I do sometimes forget that humorless twits make this kountry grate!~)

Check this. I think they make fun of libtards. Get your laugh on. http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/

This is a good example of mainstream media brainwashing- repetition. How many times does he repeat the term "hate-radio?" But when someone like Dana Jacobsen says live on ESPN, "F*** Jesus" it doesn't even make the mainstream media news. It's not hate because she's Jewish, right? I don't agree with any of those radio hosts but it's not hate.

Hate is when you say everyone in a certain group is the same which is how these radio pundits thrive. Like all feminists hate men. All liberals are on welfare. All gays are trying to seduce our young. Of course, it would be interesting if we evil moderates would do the same. Let's see. All radio pundits abuse drugs. All conservatives look for sex in men's bathrooms. All priests sexually abuse people. All televangelists pay for hookers. All older war mongers didn't serve in the military. Of course, reasonable, thinking people realize that none of the above statements are true. But some people prefer not to think. They'd rather listen to the radio.

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

"That's because his opinions represent those of the average Republican, and Republicans always need to hear repetitive confirmation that they are not alone."-max1

--Or could it be that people enjoy hearing a message of optimism for the country. People could also like the entertainment that comes from his political humor. There is definately more of a reason for his insane ratings then mind-numbed robots listening. But maybe if people listened to the show before criticizing it they would understand. I also think the term 'hate' is being thrown around way too loosely these days.

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

Were you trying to prove something with those quotations beacause apparently I'm not smart enough to figure out what it is.

Bubarubu 6 years, 10 months ago

mick whinges: "But when someone like Dana Jacobsen says live on ESPN, "F*** Jesus" it doesn't even make the mainstream media news. It's not hate because she's Jewish, right?"

It's not hate because she was drunk at a private roast, apologized afterwards. and was then suspended for her job for a week. It was a mistake and she acknowledged it as such. Rush, et.al. make careers saying the sort of things on air Jacobsen said once. But hey, if you want to compare the relative importance of Rush, Savage, Ingraham, etc., to a middle-of-the-pack sports news/talk show on basic cable, that's fine.

I'm guessing max1 is a raging conservative who's trying to tell us that we shouldn't vote for McCain because he's not Republican enough. At least that's how it reads.

Find one quote from any of the conservative people listed above that says "...all feminists hate men. All liberals are on welfare. All gays are trying to seduce our young." If you can find that then maybe you can have an argument.

kansas778 6 years, 10 months ago

jhawks22, no one reads what max1 posts, just ignore him like everyone else.

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 6 years, 10 months ago

jhawks22 I was referring to the likes of Rush and Anne. They are the hate mongers.

Dollypawpaw Conservatives disown all their perverts.

Have you stopped listening to Rush, since he refused to throw himself in jail for life, because he succumbed to drug abuse? And the radical conservatives claim to be Christian. Most Christians I know believe in forgiveness, but I guess Rush's followers would consider that wimpy.

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

dorothyhr, apparently you havn't ever listened to one broadcast of Limbaugh's show, rather you criticize him by using your fabricated stereotypes of him that contain absolutley no truth whatsoever. and instead of agruing against his points you talk about his personal life as if you know him. but the truth is, that is what you have to resort to because you cannot compete in the arena of ideas.

Dorothy Hoyt-Reed 6 years, 10 months ago

This was a funny editorial. He was expressing his opinion, just like old Rush does. So Rush is allowed to, but not this guy. Do I hear hypocrisy again?

The reason AirAmerica didn't survive is because moderates and those slightly to the left do not like listening to this kind of nastiness, so they didn't have the ratings.

jhawks22. Would you please discuss this issue with me then. Why is it ok for people like Anne and Rush to imply people who don't agree with them are traitors and liberals, but it's mean and nasty for anyone to attack them. Why is it ok for Rush to say drug users should be thrown into prison, but not him. Why is it ok for Anne to condemn feminists when she would not have been able to what she does, if they hadn't fought for her right to it? Do I hear more hypocrisy?

Sigmund 6 years, 10 months ago

The Liberal Left after wasting many millions of dollars propping up Air America, fresh from their recent failures to revive the "Fairness Doctrine," and "Campaign Finance Reform" that limits political free speech thirty days before elections, is now all to eager to exploit the very public debate between Talk Radio and the conservative base of the republican party.

I guess all this proves that not all Rush fans are "mind numbed robots," the free market will eliminate networks like Air America who are completely out of step with their audience no matter how much money they have, and it rewards those who are in step with their audience.

But I do understand the eagerness for some to wish Talk Radio was eliminated and the old media regain their importance and the audience they lost. After repeated premature predictions over the years that Talk Radio is dead, I'll just wait and see. After all CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, and The Los Angles Times continue to layoff their work force in the face of declining viewers and readers yet they are still hanging around. I bet Talk Radio will be around for years to come as well.

I suppose Jim Shea, the author of this piece, may be somewhat of an expert in declining readers. The Hartford Courant for which he writes lost 31,000 subscribers a 15% decline since 2000 and was sold to a real estate developer!

Somehow, I knew this column wouldn't bring out the love.

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

Again, saying someone is a liberal or treasonous does not equal hate. And don't even get me started on hypocrisy, but I sure don't remember Rush being found guilty in a court of law. But again, you're talking about his personal life not arguing him in the arena of ideas because you can't. Also, the reason Air America is an utter and complete failure is because the left has no ideas to talk about, no optimism for anything-just negativity and whining about people and the country day after day, that is not entertaining to anyone!

bisky1 6 years, 10 months ago

to the left smart means that you agree with their nothing but brilliant ideas and has nothing to do with cognitive abilities. hate means the same, i agree with your ideas, you have no free speech rights unless you agree with the left.

topekan7 6 years, 10 months ago

I think, when it comes to hate, it's clear that Jim Shea of the Hartford Courant leads the pack.

bondmen says, "Millions of Americans listen to talk radio for the balance that is missing on TV and in the newspapers."

You can't be more ridiculous with that statement! HAHAHAHAHA!

Dollypawpaw (Anonymous) says:

"I HATE men that breed women and then run off to breed more women.

I think a 70% rate of fatherless families is too much."

OK, we'll get you back on the crazy train shortly, Dolly.

Having trouble putting a reasonable thought together there? Must be all that brilliance shining through. Don't worry, we'll get you back on the crazy train, too.

Wow, the wheels really have come off for you guys.

a_flock_of_jayhawks 6 years, 10 months ago

For those that are curious, there's a sure way to tell when your news/entertainment is "hate oriented".

When they have someone on the show that they are interviewing, they never get to finish answering a question. Instead, they get shouted down and ridiculed.

There you have it. An easy guide for you. Why do they do it? Because they can't stand letting someone present an opposing point of view...that just wouldn't be "balanced".

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

Awwwwwwwww.....a_flock_of_jayhawks, ridiculed? No, we can't have that!!! Shouted down?? You can't be serious, listen to one broadcast and you might realize how asinine your statements are. Talk radio doesn't have to be balanced, it BALANCES the rest of the media, so get over your template of "hate" on talk radio and understand its been here for over 20 years and its not going away!

a_flock_of_jayhawks 6 years, 10 months ago

jayhawks22 says, "Talk radio doesn't have to be balanced, it balances the rest of the media, "

That's an interesting equation there, but it doesn't work. I have listened. It's pretty entertaining at times, especially given the current quandary.

Alas, you are correct that it isn't going away.

a_flock_of_jayhawks 6 years, 10 months ago

"ridiculed? No, we can't have that!!! Shouted down??"

Look, if that's what you want out of your, eh hem, news, then go for it. Just don't come complaining to us with the uninformed look in your eyes.

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

Oh I see, you're more informed than me because you get your news from the drive-by media.
"Judged by their answers to three knowledge questions, the most informed audiences belong to the political magazines, Rush Limbaugh's radio show, The O'Reilly Factor, news magazines, and online news sources. Close behind are the regular audiences for NPR and The Daily Show." Pew Survey, July 2006 His program is number two in all American media in education and knowledge. It is preceded only by the Weekly Standard and the New Republic. But I'm sure you're a lot smarter and much more informed than me.

jhawks22 6 years, 10 months ago

Thats the best you could come up with. Listen, we could trade quotations back and forth all day about your drive-by media and the media I choose to get my information from, but the fact is these people have well-informed, educated audiences. Don't make me start bringing out every quote from your newscasts that were proven to be as wrong as possible and ruined people's lives forever.

a_flock_of_jayhawks 6 years, 10 months ago

You're excused.
