Institute for Young Musicians seeks applicants for program

Applications currently are being accepted for the annual International Institute for Young Musicians summer program, which will take place July 6 through Aug. 1 at Kansas University.

The program, which draws young pianists from across the country, involves both a competition and lessons taught by faculty members from across the nation. Jack Winerock, piano professor at KU, is among the instructors.

The IIYM program is open for students born after July 6, 1988, and before July 6, 1996. Cost ranges from $1,450 for a two-week session for those not living in KU residence halls to $3,750 for a four-week session for those living on campus.

To audition, students must send a CD or DVD performing two solo pieces showing contrasting styles. The application deadline is April 11, and more information can be found at www.iiym.com. In the past, around 100 young pianists have been selected.

The IIYM also will be under way this year when “From the Top,” a public radio program featuring young musical talent, comes to the Lied Center for a show July 15. Students hoping to participate in the IIYM events also are encouraged to audition for “From the Top.”
