Scam circulating via text messages

The text message Rose House received on Monday told her that she needed to verify her credit union account by calling a phone number. Suspicious activity had been found involving that account, the message stated.

“As soon as I saw it I knew that it was a fraud because I don’t have a credit union account,” the Eudora woman said.

House called the number, 1-888-236-2599, to see who would answer. A recording told her to enter information about an account. House called the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and was referred to the Eudora Police Department.

Eudora Police Chief Greg Dahlem said the department had already taken a report from someone else that day about the same scam effort. Dahlem ran the number through an Internet search and found that it was involved in similar scams elsewhere.

“I guess it’s going on all over,” he said.

Anyone who is targeted by such a scam should notify their cell phone company so officials can investigate, Dahlem said.

Great, not only can you lose all your money to these people, but they're gonna make you pay $0.20 for the darn text messages too!

You're paying 20 cents for a text message, maxcrabb? Time for a new wireless provider!

I think you should refer it to the state attorney general's office, enough complaints and maybe consumer fraud will get some attention at the state or federal level where they actually might be able to do something. Call your cell phone company, or call your email provider if you get scammed and they will handle it?. Consumer fraud or scams seem to be a gray area, you know , one the local cops don't do.

I have 200 a month for an $5...The people who would fall for this, though, probably don't...

Haven't had a text message but lots of emails about my account in banks I have accounts with. I guess they figure they will make a few hits from legitimate account holders "smart" enough to give them all the info they need.

Had texting turned off because of this. ATT now charging $.30@text. Their charge doesn't make sense when texts use a tiny fraction of the bandwidth that voice uses!! Tried the number today and it's been disconnected. Was disappointed as I wanted to play;)
