KU Jazz Vespers set to swing tonight

Dan Gailey, director of jazz studies at Kansas University, directs a March 2007 rehearsal with the KU Jazz Band in Murphy Hall.

The swingin’ sounds of the season will be featured tonight as Kansas University faculty and students perform the seventh annual KU Jazz Vespers.

The concert, at 7:30 at the Lied Center, will be hosted by Chuck Berg, professor of theater and film, who also will perform on saxophone with the Jazz Combo I. Other ensembles on the program will be Jazz Ensembles I and II.

Several faculty members will sing, including John Stephens, Genaro Mendez, Ellen Bottorff and John Staniunas. The program includes a Latin/African-themed version of “The Little Drummer Boy,” arrangements of holiday classics written by Dan Gailey, director of jazz studies, a performance of Bing Crosby’s classic “Mele Kalikimaka” and KU student Logan Heer’s new arrangement of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”

Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12.50 for adults.
