Smoke odor evacuates Hampton Inn

Police are still investigating what caused a two-vehicle wreck that sent three women to area hospitals early Thursday morning.

Two sport utility vehicles crashed into each other shortly before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Iowa and 15th streets, even ejecting one woman from the back of one of the vehicles.

A Ford Explorer traveling south on Iowa Street collided with a Dodge Durango moving west on 15th Street. Lawrence police Capt. Ray Urbanek said Thursday evening that a 24-year-old Lawrence woman, who was riding in the Explorer, had to be flown by air ambulance to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

The vehicle’s driver, a 35-year-old Lawrence woman, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then transferred to KU Hospital. A passenger in the Durango, who was ejected from the vehicle, was taken to LMH. A total of seven women were in the Durango, police said.

Police did not identify the women, but Urbanek said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Police also did not release a possible cause of the wreck Thursday.
