KU grad student faces charges of having gun at Jayhawker Towers

A Kansas University graduate research assistant was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of having a gun at a campus residence.

Yuan Fang, an engineering graduate student, had the weapon in Jayhawker Towers where he lives, KU Public Safety Office spokesman Capt. Schuyler Bailey said. The weapon was reported about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Bailey said Fang, who lived in Tower B, turned the gun over to police. The weapon was not loaded and no ammunition was found.

Fang, 28, was charged Thursday in Douglas County District Court with one count of possessing a firearm on state grounds, a misdemeanor. His bond was set at $1,000, court records said.

He was suspended from KU on an interim basis, said KU spokeswoman Jill Jess. A hearing will be conducted. “Under state law and university policy, weapons are prohibited in university buildings,” Jess said in a written statement. “Violation of these prohibitions is a serious matter.”

Fang no longer lives in campus housing, she said.

He’s due back in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
