Emergency crews respond to fire in Eudora

No one injured, but animals missing

? Firefighters were on the scene Tuesday evening of a fire at a home at 927 Maple St. in Eudora that was caused by an open oven.

Fire officials were called to the home shortly after 4:30 p.m.

The residents of the home were not there at the time the fire started, and no one was injured in the blaze.

Eudora Police Chief Greg Dahlem was one of the first officers on the scene.

“Our first concern was to make sure there wasn’t anybody in there,” he said.

Eudora’s Deputy Fire Chief Mike Underwood said tenants in the home left the oven in the kitchen open and on to heat the house.

Grease that was left on the stove caught fire. The rest of the home suffered smoke damage.

The family told police that they do have one dog and two birds. The animals had not yet been located.

The Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the residents of the home with food and clothing.
