A 32-year-old Lawrence man has been charged in Douglas County District Court with the rape of a child in late 2006 or early 2007.

The victim was 11 years old at the time of the incident, which occurred at the south Lawrence home of a family friend, said Kim Murphree, Lawrence police spokeswoman. The investigation started as a referral from Social and Rehabilitation Services, she said.

During the suspect’s first court appearance on Monday, his bond was set at $150,000 and he was ordered to have no contact with the victim, according to a spokeswoman for District Attorney Charles Branson.

The Journal-World generally does not name suspects in sex crimes unless they are convicted.
