A Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced Monday to serve 25 years in prison for the robbery and murder of a former Lawrence man in 2007.
A judge in Jackson County, Mo., sentenced Antonio E. Smith, 18, to concurrently serve four 25-year prison terms after he was convicted in March of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and first-degree robbery.
Police found Derek A. Orchard, 37, of Overland Park, shot to death May 16, 2007, in southern Kansas City. Orchard graduated from Lawrence High School in 1988. He worked in marketing in the Kansas City area while living in Overland Park with his wife and three children.
Also charged in Orchard's murder is Lamar D. Quarles, 19 of Kansas City, Mo. His trial is set to begin Sept. 8.
Prosecutors have said Smith and Quarles took Orchard to a park, robbed him, killed him and stole Orchard's car. Police later stopped them in the vehicle.
