Decision delayed on fine arts school

Kansas University officials say any decisions about a possible restructuring of the School of Fine Arts have been delayed because of the university’s need to review its budget.

Provost Richard Lariviere had said earlier this summer he planned to make a decision about the school before the start of the academic year. However, after KU was asked to work out a possible 7 percent budget reduction over the next two years, the fine arts decision was pushed back.

Lariviere sent an e-mail to department chairs in late July, saying that his early August deadline wasn’t going to pan out.

“I assure you that I will make a final determination on the structure of the school as early as possible in the fall semester,” he wrote.

Lariviere is meeting with those who would be directly affected by any changes, university spokeswoman Lynn Bretz said.

The decision to study a possible restructuring of the school came last academic year, after university officials were unable to find a satisfactory applicant to fill the vacant dean of fine arts position.
