Private enterprise

To the editor:

In the Old Home Town section, it was reported on Aug. 4, 1908, that an electric car line was being planned. It would be financed by local men, not by any form of government.

Today’s city commissioners no doubt, to some degree, see the need for public transportation with $4-per-gallon gas, the need to reduce emissions, etc.

Now we come to local folks who have formed delegations to address local issues, social or public. The group that makes the most noise is the Grassroots Action. On certain points, I agree; on others I do not. They call for funding the T totally with tax money.

Now my question to the coalition is this: Why not take a lesson from history and find ways to come up with private funding to reduce the red ink? Would not this be a better use of their energy instead of causing friction by drawing lines in the sand?

Some items require one to get up on that soap box and stay there (i.e., John Brown). Others require one to just get busy to solve problems. Don’t be like the wind – heard, but never seen.
